"The Actual Event"
As you might have noticed, I have not rushed forward to tell you that our "Relay" team captured First Place. While we all got a kick out it and thought it was pretty cool, there was so much going on, so much to see and so many women that touched our hearts; winning took a back seat to everything else. Here are my observations for Danskin Race Day of which I have, "more than ever", respect for the women who have accomplished the complete Tri.
First of all, hats off to Trek who generously loans bicycles to women for use in the event. Tori Broughton and Lindsay Bradley both worked very hard to meet with, and assist anyone that required help. They are such good representatives to be in the public eye. I was also inspired by the women that participated with varied challenges and I was touched by the men that stood by their women and helped them complete their dream. The friendship and fun that is shared together with friends, family and strangers, is contagious and keeps multiplying as the day progresses.
It was a wonderful experience and I am so happy that I was able to be there. Many life lessons learned. What's next?

"Bragging Rights"
Saturday my daughter Annie and I participated in the Danskin Expo. This is where everyone shows up at different times during the day to register and sign their waivers to participate in the Triathlon that will be held the following day. What a fun time was had by all. Lines and lines of people are gabbing and sharing previous experiences with the first timers. Everyone is helping each other write their bib numbers on their bodies with the traditional black markers, and oh yes of course, browsing from booth to booth gathering give-a-way's and clever gadgets. After that was taken care of I proceeded to help Lindsay with greeting people at the Trek booth. I enjoyed so much talking to so many people, and was delighted to see how receptive everyone is to the "Women Who Ride Club"; many ladies were already signed up. What a crowd; I'm not sure how many boxes of ride guides were passed out, but we had the longest line at the expo and it was quite a sight. Trek had a bicycle on site and a bin full of keys. Everyone had a chance to try their luck at opening the lock. The 20 winning keys were then drawn at the end of the day for the big winner of the bike. I'll submit a picture of the winner later in the week. I just want to say the winner was very deserving and an inspiring example of her own courage. As a reminder, the Danskin event is to benefit Breast Cancer research and awareness.
I have so many thoughts I want to share with you, that it will take at last two more submittals to give you a good overview of the experience. Let me just leave you with one thought. The Trek Relay Team has earned some bragging rights. WooHoo!!! for Lindsay, Annalisa and Marie...

"Butterflies"
The butterflies have arrived as they always do when I am facing new experiences. For those of you that have read my story from the beginning, there is a strong link to my life and the butterfly image. So when the flutters begin, in come the Butterflies to inspire and remind me why I belong to the life I am living; to share the inspiration and help to find the spirit, to accomplish what we want to do.
This week I have been preparing for my first bike ride in a Danskin Triathlon so I have been mindful of my nutrition intake, hydration and completed the majority of my training early in the week. I have done my research on the website and have my checklist prepared along with a once over on the bike. The countdown now begins and I am creating yet another "To take Along" staging area on the living room floor. Now, it's time to take a deep breath, relax and enjoy the fun. I'll be taking pictures, meeting with friends and building memories. Stay tuned for the reports next week.

"Cairo Carnivale"
All movement is good. Today my Belly Dance sisters and I attended the Cairo Carnivale and the setting was the historic Santa Anita Race Track in Arcadia, California. Meet Loretta and Michele.
We went together to support our georgeous teacher, Aviana and watch her perform. Of course the show was great and the shopping wasn't bad either. This gives us an opportunity to get ourselves outfitted for the next season of dance. In profusion today were skirts, scarves, jewelry, hip belts, you name it.
When we first started our classes, we were rather shy about what to wear, not unlike when I started to ride my bicycle. "Is it OK to wear that jersey, are those only the real racers that are allowed to wear those?" Just as now I have a closet full of jerseys, I have another section of that closet that holds my dance costumes and we were saying today, that it is part of the fun to get dressed up and enjoy the experience, just like when I ride my bike.
Here is another good thing, Loretta and her husband ride bikes and in fact Ed participates in many organized events. She showed me today where you can pick up the bike path along the 605 freeway and take it all the way to the beach southbound or all the way North to the foothills. We will plan a ride together, and this looks like an area that I can probably ride with others.

Come Ride With Us
Got a message through the grapevine that Doreen and her friends were riding on Saturday and she said "Come Ride With Us! "Absolutely I would, I would love to."
With the exception of Doreen, these were all new faces to me. As a once painfully shy person, I embrace the now "Meet and Greet" because it gives me the opportunity to talk to new acquaintences and find that we are all so very much alike. This is a goup of friends and neighbors that have known each other for a long time as well as a few more in the mix that also participate on the rides. We have decided to get together on a regular basis and a few of us are going to get on our Mountain Bikes and go in another direction sometime soon. More adventures at 60.
Thanks Doreen, Cathy, Tina Chuck and Paul, I have picked up some new tips and enjoyed conversation with each and every one of you. What did we talk about; "One World Two Wheels", healthy ageing, childhood obesity, customized bikes, Gearing up a hill ( my next story will elaborate on that) Nursing studies and the healthy image nurses can/should project, our children, sunscreen housekeeping and oh yes Nuclear Power. I look forward to our next visit.
My next stories will show more insights into my ride including Conquering the Hill with my gears and My First Flat Tire, that I discovered upon returning home. Thank goodness the first flat is finally out of the way, now I won't obsess over that anymore.

"Passionate Prince Andrew"
Andrew Scherf is top notch Royalty in my bicycle journal. I might have touched on this story briefly, but to recap, he is the team leader on our Lance Armstrong Team Challenge. Through this very blog, we met and through this very blog, he invited me to join his team of riders this July in San Jose California.
Andrew, all by his lonesome has managed to get me to overcome every objection I have experienced so far about participating in this ride. This is a young family man and daddy that does a Century Ride with as much ease as I participate in a 5K walk on a Saturday morning. Why do you suppose he cares if I show up or not. Passion; he has a passion for the cause of helping people to withstand the Cancer battle, and he has a Passion for the sport of cycling. Put those two concepts together and you have a powerful force to contend with. So, here I am these days with this event in the forefront of my mind. I am making adjustments in my training and lifestyle that will help me get to this ride for however many miles I complete.
The beautiful thing about a real team, is the word "Team"; Together Everyone Achieves More. The one reason I will participate is because I feel we will all be working together. For those that complete fewer miles, that's OK too. Andrew has made everyone feel that we all have something to contribute to the occasion. He comments on a regular basis about my blog stories and sometimes I hit on a point that he can really connect to; believe it or not. I will be submitting more articles about Andrew, the team and my preparation for the Challenge. He has promised me some pictures to post on my blog and we will see those in the future.
Enough now about coughing and bed rest. Onward and forward for the team.

Seniors On Bikes
This is my Sister Alaine and one of her friends, Clarence. I thought it would be good this week to show another demographic of bicycle riders. Senior riders that are not competing but that use the bicycle for health, fitness and fun. (They were allowed to remove their helmets for the photo opportunity.)
Alaine and Clarence are both retired and barely have any extra time to fit another activity into their schedule. They are both fit and one of their activities that they share is riding their bicycles along the American River in Sacramento. My sister has always been an active volunteer in several charities including the "Make A Wish Foundation" and the "S.P.C.A." Clarence is a retired Professional Engineer. He also shares time with his children on the East Coast.
When I visited Sacramento in March, I was quite aware, as I always am now at this point, how many people were riding bikes in her town. All kinds, all types, all ages. She was taking in her bike for a tune up so we visited the local Trek dealer and spoke to them about many issues. She has recovered beautifully from her back surgery and will now use the bike as a comfortable form of exercise to stay "Well"
Clarence, is in his mid 70"s (I hope he doesn't mind me saying so) and is enjoying his bicycle as well. He is talking about getting a trainer like mine to use indoors during the cold weather months. Isn't the scenery beautiful.
By the way, thank you to everyone for your support this past week.

In Just a Few Hours
All is well in Orange County, California. The weekend will start in just a few hours and my time is already scheduled. One of the things I need to work on this weekend is really paying attention to the effects of the heart rate monitor and how it correlates to my exercise; indoors and outside. My dear sweet, patient coach Mary and I have shared discussions this week about my training and she has given me several issues to test out and address. Because I am scheduled to ride tomorrow morning on the mountain bike I will wear the gear and take some notes, hoping it will help me to understand some of the reasons I still get out of breath when I am riding. I already found out the answer to part of that from Mary. When you are dehydrated you heart beats faster. I need to remind myself to keep taking in water AND learn how to drink my liquids while I am in motion on the bike. Oh boy, more things on my practice list.
This week I also attended my first class session, along with daughter Gina regarding Diabetes nutrition education. It seems there are many things I should have looked into before now that would explain how I have been feeling. Exercise coupled with Diabetes can profoundly affect your well being and recovery after a ride. Just when I think I had all the answers, along comes a whole new set of questions. Do we ever stop learning about ourselves? I hope not

Hello Ladies
Hello Ladies, Molly here!
We are putting out an inquiry today to see if there are any of you out there that are interested in participating in the Danskin Triathlon in June, This particular competition will be in the Anaheim, Orange County, California area. If you have already joined or have participated in a previous Tri, I would love to hear about your experiences.
Please check out the Danskin website and read about this great event. Trek is a sponsor for all the Danskin events and they participate quite actively. There are individual competitions and relay teams that you can sign up for. Feel free to contact us and we might be able to provide you with more information and or make a connection for you to answer questions or help you to participate on a team. Several of the "Women Who Ride will be participating across the country and I know we cannot wait to get out to the event location to connect with many of you great women. This will be Mom's first time participating in a relay and I am trying to help her with the blog,so she can get her act together to step up her training.

"Time Flies"
I don't know where this week has gone, but along with it, my energy disappeared too. There seems to be so many things filling up my calendar, (what a lucky girl) that I need to take some time in the next few days to re-group my thoughts. I also wanted to take a minute to bring you up to date on breaking news this week and give you a preview of what I have on the horizon to write about.
Fist of all, in the past 6 days, I have completed the delivery of the "Twins"; an investment in my future in order to take care of myself later in life. I now have the Mountain Bike and the Road Bike. So pictures of the un-named newbies are in order. On that note I cannot delay in getting out to ride and establish a level of comfort for myself. My top priority is the road bike so I can prepare for the LIVESTRONG Challenge in July. Along those lines I have plans to introduce you to Andrew who is my main contact and team leader for this event. He is getting together a couple pictures of himself and his family, I hope. By the way, my fabulous CycleOps trainer has been a great help with the new bikes. I can get them going in the late evening trying to get a feel for the bikes and learn a little more about the new types of gears.
My dilemma is everything else I want and need to accomplish. A 60 mile bike ride that I would like to "DO" in May, a walkathon with my grandsons next week, a class reunion in July and the Danskin Triathlon in June. I need to be realistic here and make some choices about what I can do and what I need to save for another day. I still have to save energy for my training schedule and oh yes, my other job as an Office Manager.
Here is the big news and opportunity that I will not pass up. I have been invited to be a delegate in the Lance Armstrong LIVESTRONG Summit in July. They are flying me to Columbus, Ohio for 4 days where I will participate in Grassroots Advocacy training for Cancer Awareness at Ohio State University. This has always been my other passion and I am so excited and honored to have been chosen. This is just another ball that is already rolling fast and not only have I already begun to make new contacts, but I am steering them to the Trek website as a way to establish a connection and introduce myself. I'll get more thoughts together this weekend, some pictures of the "Twins" and keep information flowing out for you to read.

"Look who I bumped into"
Boy, I'm reading the blogs and seeing that the sisterhood is getting out there in public view. I was invited to JAX Bicycle for an event on Mountain Bikes or thought that's what it was about. As I walked in I recognized Dave Hansen who runs the show as well as Trek field rep Greg Johnson. Along with all the other staff that works at the store, there stood someone I recognized right away. Standing in the middle of the room in a "Purple Wool Jacket" like an icon from the "Chocolate Factory" guess who held out their hand with a great big smille, GARY FISHER...
We viewed some rare home movies, participated in a Q and A directed by Dave, and many guests brought in their Gary Fisher bikes for autographs. Also scheduled for the next day was a local ride out to Carbon Canyon and Gary was going along. Maybe the next time he visits, I will be able to function on a mountain bike.
Gary is an interesting character and the history of Mountain Biking to which he has contributed has definitely help to mold the sport as we see it today. I felt privledged to meet him. We had a lengthy one on one conversation and discussed attending the Trek dealer show in August. Wow, I am experiencing so many great things and meeting such great people. Thanks again Dave Hanson and your staff at JAX Bicycle for thinking of me. By the way, you need to stop by and meet Dave some time, he is a character in his own right.

I'm Committed or Should Be"
It's official, I have committed my heart and soul to the Lance Armstrong Challenge this July, as well as my team mates from Central Cale-forn-ya. Captain Andrew will now be refereed to as the "Terminator" and his team. Yeah, we are out to terminate Cancer, or at least do our fair share.
So, another goal, another project to train for, and much work and perseverance. That's OK, but you know it would help if you send some tips my way. Do you just pedal, pedal and pedal more in order to prepare? Can I emulate some of the information from my indoor metric century?
Well, come along with me even if it's just on paper. I think back about a year ago and I find it amazing what I have accomplished in a year. If I can do it, you can pick a goal and accomplish it too. We just have to put one foot in front of the other and start going forward. By the way, Trek Sisterhood of the Purple Business Cards, Demo Chiclets, and WSD Ladies, I will be asking for info as usual and as you always do, will respond in kind with patience, kindness and encouraging words. Talk to you all soon.
Hey, by the way, where is Ahh-nolds helmet ? What a Geek! , just kidding!

"Biggest So Far"
Today, I heard from Andrew Sheref who is the young family man that invited me to join the Central California team riding in the Lance Armstrong Challenge. Not only did he take the time to introduce every team member (on paper), but gave me a good run down of the mileage and conditions of the bike ride. I appreciate the time he took to make me feel safe and comfortable and that he is encouraging me to participate.
I have asked Trek how I can get into a Road Bike in time to use it in this ride and they are working on that for me. That is what's great about Trek, they want to help me every way they can and in this case I am able to purchase a demo bike to work on my lofty goals. I have a lot of work to do from now until July but it's a great test for me to get out there and push myself more. Also, I would love to report my step by step progress to you as I prepare.
So, if I can get into a road bike, sit down and map out a plan for the next 4 months, which I will defer to Coach Mary, I bet You will be looking at pictures of me on the starting line. If I work really hard, maybe you will be looking at me at the finish line too.

Think, Think, Think
One of the issues on the top of my list is Safety. Whenever I am planning to go anywhere, this seems to be in the forefront of my thoughts. The grocery store, to and from work, errands etc; I always look around, check out the car and watch for people around me. Not only am I looking out for unsafe situations, I am also looking out for safe situations. I want to know in my mind that I have a plan "B" to switch to if something goes wrong. Maybe it's the Girl Scout in me but it never hurts to be prepared,
Now that I am riding a bike I am very aware of "Bicycle Safety" You can wear the gear, hats, gloves, shoes, clothing, etc. but it's important to know Where you are riding. Stay with familiar places and conditions that you are sure you can maneuver. I prefer to ride with company or at least one other person, plus it's very social, but if that is not possible I am never far from someone. I stick to populated, familiar areas and ride in the daylight. Sure it restricts me but if I need a ride and the conditions are not right, I go to the gym. Please feel free to share additional tips that I might have forgotten. This is the start of the real bicycle season and everyone needs to be informed as much as possible.

"My First"
I made the trip to experience my "First" bicycle event, the Tour of California. While we had rain here all weekend, and I was armed with very little information about the event, I decided to visit the "Santa Clarita Event Day" as this had less chance for rain. It seems like nothing is easy but I got there, and while waiting for the event to begin I ran into our Trek representative for the men's bicycles. I saw some vendors set up, a stage etc. turns out I wasn't even in the right place. By the time I found my way around to the correct location / The Finish Line; there were so many people I could barely see what was going on. What did I learn?
- Next time I'll travel with a "veteran"
- The Tour of California is getting more popular every year
- Find more events to participate in to become a "veteran"
- Don't be discouraged, keep getting out there
- I'm not invisible, but this is a high profile event
- More stuff to learn about; including myself
- Build a stronger support group
Do I sound a little down? I am, so somehow I need to turn the page, move on to what's on tap for tomorrow, and get started on the next poject. Tee Hee

Come Ride With Me
I received an invitation to join a team that will be participating in the Lance Armstrong Challenge. This is an event that will take place in California in July 2008. I really want to do this for many reasons.
I received such a nice letter and invitation from one of my readers. I have always tried to keep Cancer Awareness in the forefront of all my journalizing whenever I could. This is for the memory of Cliff and all the families that have been touched by Cancer. It's something I can write and report about on my Blog. Lance Armstrong will be there, I think, and I would love to see him or get a picture with him. Maybe TREK can intervene here on several levels.
Here are some of the things I need to work out.
- I need to get a company to sponsor my ride.
- I don't know these team members, how do I work through that?
- I will need to drive myself to San Jose and it is quite a clip on my own, although I can do it.
What I am asking from you folks is this; do you recognize anything here that I am not seeing? Does anyone have any suggestions for the "Newby". Any concerns or tips you could pass along regarding the travel, the sponsor, participating in the actual event? I have got time but would like some help putting this together and making this happen. Not only is it a great cause, but it would be another milestone for me to accomplish and I think that is one of the reasons I was chosen for this venue. I have nothing to loose and everything to gain. Please let me hear from you.
By the way "Go Levi"

"Excuse Me, Coming Through"
What could possibly be better than watching your child take his first bike ride? I found something; taking your first bike ride with a grandchild.
I was delighted to see Will navigate his little Trek "Mountain Cub" with such determination. (wonder where that comes from). He had only borrowed one of his friends bikes the week before to practice at the park. He doesn't care that the bike came from a garage sale for $15.00. It's a Trek and that is the same make as Gran Marie rides. I told him to keep riding and maybe in 6 months there would be a new bike to learn about and grow into. One for Jackie too; currently Jack is riding Will's old Batman bike with training wheels.
So we made the outing a lesson. We learned how to cross the street by walking our bike making sure everyone can see us before stepping into the crosswalk. We practiced courtesy while passing pedestrians. I cautioned Will to pass them on the left. "Do you know which side is the left?' I asked. "Sure, it's the hand that I write with". So as we got ready to pass. He announced very proudly. "Excuse me, little boy coming through on a bike with his Grandma." I was laughing as the couple we passed said to me, "You better not let him get ahead of you"
So my hope is that the boys will always remember the day at the park and many more to come. The Grandma With The Bicycle, and all that implies will remind them of Fun, Health, Love and Memories. By the way, notice the Shrek Jersey; the boys loved their surprise.

"Blind Date" Part 2
Here we go again, rolling down the road. I was able to keep up with these two ladies pretty well. There were only two places that I slowed down; both on a hill climb. Part of the problem is that I am uncertain how and when to shift my gears as I approach a hill. If I shift down too soon, then I sit there and spin but I don't go anywhere. If I shift a little later, it's too late. I admit I need to work on my shifting and I dream of getting that trainer for my bike, so I can master this technique. At one rare point in the day's ride the girls were approaching me from behind, they said "Marie, you need to raise the seat on your bike. Your legs are going to start to hurt". "Going to?" I said. So as they passed approaching a hill, I screwed up my shifting and dropped my chain. (You gotta love how I keep trying, even though I look so pathetic trying to learn this stuff basically on my own.)
So the girls are now out of sight, over the hill and there I stand suddenly looking way up into the face of a this "Stud". "You need to raise your seat" he said, "OK, anything else?" I said sheepishly. "Let's fix the chain", he offered, "I know how to do that because I had a triple once." I am beginning to quiver wondering about the triple he had with chains. Don't worry, by this time I know it's all about the bicycle. So he gave the pedal this magic jerk and the chain was back into place. Oh my gosh, this just gets better. Then he said, let's check the seat. "Get on the seat", and he straddled the front wheel. Now I have seen a picture of Krista Rettig doing this in our training book, but, sorry Krista, this was worth writing 100 blogs. Anyway, isn't it nice that there are people along the way to help you.
As I rode up the hill Arlene and Doreen were waiting for me very patiently. "I made it, I said with a big grin. This bike riding is really fun." We finished our ride and promised that we will do it again. Thanks ladies for taking me along..

"Blind Date" Part 1
Is that even politically correct these days? I have a bicycle date with two new acquaintances, Arlene and Doreen. how is that.
My daughter Gina (Will and Jack's mom) called me on the phone the other day during my lunch break. She asked if I had a minute to talk and I said "Sure". Hang on then, and she handed the phone to one of her work mates. Arlene, proceeds to tell me that she would like to have someone to ride with. After we exchanged some dialog, we decided that we were probably a good match and we could enjoy a ride together. We talked about the fact that we both enjoy riding in the same vicinity where there are many safe bike paths. Both of us are determined to get in some serious bike time.
So yesterday we met at the beginning of the trail and we were off for a new adventure. The temperature had to be 80 degrees and the air was clean and fresh. Both of these ladies had a lot of riding experience so I was challenged and that was good. Just by getting out there, I learned two maybe three important lessons. So if you want to learn too, read Blind Date part 2 and.

"The Grandma With The Bicycle"
The other day I was talking to my youngest grandson Jack on the telephone. He asked, "Are you the grandma with the grandpa? I said, "No, but I am the grandma with the bicycle". "Oh,,, cool" he replied.
This is a day I have been waiting for. It could possibly be a landmark and the beginning of a special defined relationship between my grandsons and myself. Both of the boys now have bikes and they have made somewhat of a connection because of my association with Trek bicycles. I still think they are following me around hoping that Lance Armstrong will magically appear; and that's OK, I am hoping someday for the same thing.
I am going to arrange a bike day at the park and ask their Mom and Dad if we can all go together to ride the path. I want them to experience the freedom and safety that the park offers. Since the boys are in between Soccer, T-Ball, and all their other activities, this is a perfect time to go test the bikes. I would love for them someday to look back on these times and talk about how much fun they had with their "Grandma that rode the bicycle". The boys know that I always have a little something for them when we get together. Will and Jack, this time I have a really cool suprise.

"Until We Hear About Pickleball"
Hi Marie, Here are some pictures of me while my team, Double Nickels (we are a 55 yr. old team hence the name) were in Louisville, KY last year in June to compete in the Nat'l Senior Olympic Games. They are played every other year in different states and next year California will be hosting in San Francisco. Keep in mind that there are over 18 different events and biking is one of them. They breakdown the ages in increments of 5 years, i.e. 50 to 54, etc. up to 100 years plus.
In one of my first Senior Olympics back in 1999, I watched a 99 year old woman play horse shoes. She was in a wheel chair and her son wheeled her up to her spot and she stood out of her chair and tossed those shoes and it was a site to see. Needless to say she won the Gold since she was the only one competing in her event! It's just so cool to be part of any sport, in any event at the ripe old age of 50 to 100 plus!
In the team picture with white shirts I'm in the last row, and in the picture on the jungle gym, I'm in the 2nd row in back of the circle. I promise I will send you info on Pickleball and get a picture for you soon.
Love ya more than my luggage! Mud
Soooo, there you have it, more inspiring stories. If anyone else wants to share their story, let me know. I am happy to have guest bloggers from time to time because not only does this expand the reading audience, but it also confirms what we are trying to do here. We want you to get outside, enjoy the day, learn to ride bike, help the environment and appreciate your life for the simple pleasures; then.

"Class of 1965" Part 1
I wanted to start out this new series of stories about aging and how that feels, sharing the profound words of the great comedian George Carlin. This is really something to think about. It reminds me never to take myself too seriously, so have fun with it.
Do you realize that the only time in our lives when we like to get old is when we are kids? If you are less that 10 years old, you are so excited about aging that you think in fractions. "How old are you?" "I'm four and a half!" Teens always jump to the next number, "I'm Gonna be 16!", then you Become 21. But, then you Turn 30 , Oooohh, what happend there?, something like bad milk, HE TURNED. You Become 21, you Turn 30, then you're Pushing 40. It's all slipping away and before you know it, you Reach 50 and your dreams are gone. But wait!!! You Make it to 60. You didn't think you would. So, you BECOME 21, TURN 30, PUSH 40, REACH 50 and MAKE it to 60.
Your have built up so much speed that you HIT 70! After that it's a day-by-day thing; you HIT Thursday. You Get into your 80's and every day is a complete cycle; (NOTICE I AM WRITING ABOUT CYCLES) You HIT lunch, It Turns 4:30, you Reach bedtime. and it doesn't end there, Into the 90's, you start going backwards; "I Was Just 92." Then a strange thing happens. If you make it over 100, you become a little kid again. "I'm 100 and a half!" May you all make it to a healthy 100 and a half!!
My next post I am going to introduce you to a long time friend that has contacted me with some updates on her life. We are going to tell a little story about two women just entering their prime. Bicycle riding, sports and feeling pretty darn good about our lives today. Next post, my high school graduation picture.

"Meet Aviana"
This is beautiful Aviana, my Belly Dancing teacher. I cannot express how great she can make a women feel about dancing, expressing yourself and feeling good about who we are in our own skin. This is what it is all about. I am back to class after some period of time due to my knee problems. I have decided that I want to do this not only because of the exercise, but the great union of people that are involved in this art form. I will be writing more about this later but I want you to be thinking about a few things.
This could fall under the category of Adventures at 60, but also, Training, Goals, Equipment and being equipped, through the looking glass, but really...This is My Life. My Life is about getting out there, and setting an example for other women. I certainly don't have any more to offer than the average 60 year old women, and maybe that is why you relate to me. I am doing something that anyone can do. Probably things you would like to do but felt as though people would judge you wrongly for trying different things.
Please try something new; even if it is a new lipstick color. Do you know how long I was taking Belly Dancing classes before I would admit that to the general public? (I think it might be happening today). Make yourself a short list of a few things you would like to do. Tuck it away in a pretty little jewel box, put it on a shelf so that evey time you pass by, you will think about the list in the box. Then, at some time you might decide to do one of the things you have written down. If you feel silly about this, send Me your list, I can post some of the ideas without any names attached and we can compare some of our wishes. Maybe if we get a good list going, you will want to add new things to the secret box. By the way, stay connected because I have met a new lady who is going to..

Where are the "Glovies" Part 2
I want to thank everyone that wrote to me about Grandparents, role models, and the positive effect we can all have on the youth of today. Not only is it good for them but it's great for our generation too. We have an opportunity to get outside, move about, have some fun and contribute to a conversation about something other than getting old, stiff, aches & pains.
I want to be a role model for my grandsons and so far, probably because they are so young, it's working. I'll have to keep re-inventing myself in order for them to stay in awe of Grand Marie. The good thing about that, as long as I am improving to inspire them, it's helping me too.
My bicycle Guru Bruce and I share many simple things in life. At this point, we are not about accumulating material things with the exception of bike gear. Together we cherish good memories, friends and a healthy lifestyle that we find comfortabe to maintain. The good thing about what we practice is that we have the energy to keep up with the kids and enjoy their company. Try to do something this week to make that possible. Here is a start, attend one of their sport events or acivities or just visit to share some "silly". If you have suggestions about how to spend quality time with your grandkids, send them along for all of us to read. Suggestions for long distance relatives too!

Back on Track
So the holidays are behind us and in some cases there are other things behind me...
All in all I was pretty good during the holidays but I need to get back to my routine. There is something to be said about "Normal". Can it be that expecting an hour out of our day to be scheduled with something as Personal Time, feels like an act of selfishness? Not really if you have anyone in your life that depends on you, it should be considered as important as stopping to partake in a nutritious meal.
My work out partner Kathryn and I, were back at the gym working out with all the other people that are filled with good intentions. We felt pretty darn good this morning and were even discussing the addition of another class of some sort. This too is something to consider because moving things around as well as variety, is not only good for the mind but for your body. You might consider a change that will shake up and wake up your metabolism. Here is a thought; visit a store that sells exercise equipment, and get on a few of the machines, try them out and see what is comfortable for you. This works much better then buying something you see on television; and it gives you a better selection. Then,

"I Made It"
There is so much to tell you about that it will have to appear in a few segments. I arrived to very cold weather, "zero" in fact, but I find you just move from building to transportation to building, so fortunately it's not too bad. As the other Trek Women Who Ride will be arriving from the East Coast later this morning, I spent a few with two ladies from the Trek Women's Demo Team. These are the ladies that tour the United States and bring the equipment to the people; meet Chris Garrison and Ross Rushin. I look forward to speaking with them more to find out when they plan to come to California.
Now I am on my way to the gym to warm up a little before my part of the meetings begin.

I loved the view I was able to enjoy while I performed my meager little workout this morning. Please notice the palm tree inside the pool room, it's just like Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. OK, I'm off to explore and take more pictures, see ya later.

"I'm On My Way"
This is a picture of Trek Bicycles in Waterloo, Wisconsin, but it was taken last July on my first visit.
It's 6:00 a.m. on January 2nd, 2008 and the Aiport Shuttle picked me up an hour ago. I am just arriving at LAX to hop a plane and meet with the gang at Trek. This is like a little kid preparing for a field trip with lots of anticipation for a fun experience ahead.
I have tried to gather up some warm gear, and left the California style, Hawaiian shirts and flip flops at home. Although my toes are painted red, I doubt that they will ever leave the confinement of my warm socks. I bought NEW warm socks, gloves and gathered up all the neck scarves that have been gathering dust in my closet. As you can probably guess, this is yet another new encounter for me because there will be snow and cold weather to enjoy? Molly is at the "Doggie" Spa visiting her friends while I am away. Although Trek is wonderful about taking care of my transportation and lodging, there are still issues for me to take care for a trip like this. However, I am reaping many benefits so I think it is important to accept such an invitation. I'll keep you posted on my activities.

A Visitor From "Baton Rouge"
I am still here at the hotel. In no time at all, I bumped into a long time friend, Laurie Durnin. I have been communicating with Laurie and she has been reading my blog, so it was a perfect fit. Since her husband was involved in the sales meetings, she had some time available in her schedule to Ride With Me.
I really connect with Laurie and we share many interests and prospectives about life. She has participated in relay triathlons as a swimmer, ( I must find out more about that), as well as something else very important. She works for the state of Louisiana, and is very much involved with helping people rebuild their lives as a result of hurricane Katrina.
We hardly had a quiet moment between us because there was so much to discuss.
So we met up and were on our way to Balboa Island where we hopped the ferry to take us across to the city, seashore, pier and boardwalk. We rode, walked, had coffee, dropped the chain from my bike; well actually I guess I did that, but she talked me through the repair and all in all, it was a great adventure. I have found a new safe place that I can return to on my own, or bring along more of my cycling friends. Actually, my sister will be returning soon for the holidays, and this might be a place where I can bring her to,

Cambria & Harmony - Road Trip Part 4
This will be the last post about my trip up the California coast and I will begin to think about where I want to vist in the future.
Cambria and Harmony are two small towns along the way to Hearst Castle. I might add that Harmony has a population of 18, and we found only one shop open that day which featured hand made pottery; oh yes, and a small winery. Cambria on the other hand is a bustling community that is well know for artisans and crafters. I was reminded of the 1960's as we wandered from shop to shop because of the high quality craftmanship that came out of that era. Why would I like to return to Cambria? It is one of the most romantic places I have ever visited, with the exception of Hawaii. The common thread is that Cambria reminds me of Maui as it was many years ago.
There is a whole community of bicycle enthusiasts and it is a beautiful site to see these bird-like creatures sailing up the coastline on their bikes as though they were one with nature and the seagulls. I am not comfortable yet with this type of riding and choose to stay close to back roads and paths but now I can say I rode my bike in this notable area; one more thing to cross off my very long list.

Hearst Castle - Road Trip Part 3
It sometimes amuses me that I have lived in California all my life and there are still so many areas left to explore. I am about to discover another new location; Hearst Castle. Because Gold Leaf Gauche has never been my style, well maybe a little in the 70s, I never really had any urge to rush up to San Simeon to visit the Hearst Castle. But because today the timing was right and I was in the company of my two light hearted girl friends, we all were up to a visit, even though they had experienced the castle before.
As we traveled up the coast through the fog and rain I was wondering if that would put a damper on the experience. As I found myself gathered with several others, in a "Garden" from another time and era, the fog and rain showers made it rather mysterious and intriguing. As we walked from room to room, it was as though the spirits of the past were milling about with all the excitement of days gone by; a tight clique of celebrities meeting to hang out together. Even if you never visit the castle, look on the website; it's facinating history of one man's empire.
There was no bike riding up by the castle, and you cannot drive your own car up there, so on the way back to Cayucos, we stopped along the way to ride a little bit, It's a beautiful part of the California coast that is still open land for all to enjoy.

Cayucos - Road Trip Part 2
We made it! and our friend Susie was standing on her deck as we drove up. It wasn't easy parking on that hill with the boat load of stuff we had packed. Jeeez I hope the emergency break holds.
After unpacking we took the all new to us, Tour de Cayucos. This town lives up to its motto, "The Town That Time Forgot". Nestled in a quiet cove on the California coast the cottages do not match the ever popular red clay tile roof line we are used to seeing. All the houses in this enchanted little town are different in color, shape and size. Just down that road behind Susie (in the pciture) you can follow that around and ride the coast line into their quaint little town. How quaint you ask, so quaint they have not one, but two Saloons, Antique stores galore and just as many bicycles as cars; my kind of town, just like Manhattan.
By now we have reviewed our agenda for the next few days and tomorrow we are off to San Simeon to visit Hearst Castle. Along the way we will visit the famous Elephant Seals, almost prehistoric by nature. It's a long way and we will be traveling by car; but those bikes will always be with us along our adventures; just in case we want to stop and ride a piece of the coastline.

Don't Leave Home Without It - Road Trip Part 1
So Kit and I packed up the car and we were on our way; after stopping to inflate the tires, I mean the tires on her Chevy Tahoe. We had so much stuff with us it was hilarous because we can't seem to "leave home without it".

Although I am getting better about packing, I feel as though I must Be Prepared for anything WITH everything. What can I say but once a Girl Scout, always a Girl Scout. I actually was fortunate enough to meet Lady Olave Baden Powel back in 1955. Her husband founded the Boy Scouts organization and she was Chief Girl Guide. I know, I know, that is another story but I love reminding myself just how old I really am; it's a great reality check. OK, so where was I, oh yeah, we weren't sure if we were going to be able to close the doors on the car. So we started off on our 4 hour Road Trip. We had plenty to catch up on and discuss from soup to nuts and wine to family, and we WERE able to close the doors on the car.

Over The River and Through The Woods
Over the river and through the woods requires a lot of preparation. I will be out of pocket for a few days exploring some new territory to write about on my Blog Journal. I have posted a few stories for you to read, digest and hopefully comment on while I am away.
Today I am embarking on my first official Long Distance" bicycle trip; well by that I mean it's a long way from home. A trip that will take me beyond my normal 50 mile radius. As I wrote about in a previous blog, my friend Kit Furnell is traveling here from Arizona so we can meet up with our friend Susie Ladd. The initial destination will be Cayucas, CA (located on the central CA coast in the vicinity of Cambria and Morro Bay. Hostess Susie has everything planned out for us with a busy itinerary that includes Hearst Castle, visiting the Elephant Seals, Cambria, Harmony and the wine country. I am taking my two bicycles along and Susie has one already. She has mapped out some daytime rides; one of which includes crossing Highway 101, under a bridge that takes us on a path through an old cemetary founded back in the late 1800's.
This trip has become our yearly "Hands On" visit and is also a celebration of Kit's successful cancer surgery. We have much to catch up on and celebrate. We have kept this friendship going since we all worked together back in 1968. Actually, Kit is the Godmother to one of my daughters. I've got my camera ready to go, the bikes are packed along with the helmets, and I will be taking notes in my little trip journal. There will be much to share when I return, then You can...

It's All Awareness

Cancer Awareness is such a passion of mine, that I could talk about it for hours. Saturday, October 13, Trek held their 2nd annual Breast Cancer Awareness ride. I viewed this day as a Celebration; strangers coming together on a rare rainy day to bring awareness to the importance of early detection and research. Don't think for a moment that all this research about breast cancer will not go forward to find a cure for all cancer. All cancer needs a cure and that is my message; to be out there for all of us.

There was a lot of love that was generated when we all got together today, fueled by the Energy from those who could only share the day with us in "Spirit". When the day was done, I felt that we were strangers no more. The young adults representing JAX Bicycles were gracious, helpful and a lot of fun. Everyone did a first class job welcoming all the participants and I want to especially thank Heidi McKinster for making me feel very special. She has certainly set the bar for holding a first class event. Also, kudos to TREK for the great visability that they bring to Cancer Awareness. I met a lot of great people that can help me further my biking experience. As a matter of fact, I am joining a group of "Women" on Thursday night for a fun ride. Come Ride With Me

Los Angeles aka "Hollywood"

After deciding where I want to spend the day with my bicycle, I carefully map my route. I consider the whole outing as a mini vacation and part of the fun is always in the planning. I carefully pack my little cooler with plenty of liquids and a few snacks. The recreation facilities I use always have a park-like setting and so I try to take advantage of the entire experience and devote the best part of the day just for that. Here is the caveat, this is Southern California, better know as Hollywood.
So I set out today and just try to get down the freeway, which I discover is closed because they are filming a "Will Smith" movie. It seems like just a few weeks ago there was filming for a Bruce Willis movie in the same location. In Los Angeles, if you ever have to get off the freeway other than your designated exit, the odds that you will ever find your destination are quite slim, or maybe it's just me. When these Hollywood filming events are going on, the whole outlying area is restricted because of equipment and I mean blocks and blocks of equipment.
Some time much later, I find my way to the beach, where a star player of our L.A. Hockey Team, the Kings, is hosting a volleyball tournament. All the stargazers and local traffic are using My bike path as an assembly area to observe the attractions on the beach. Wow, I must say, we are talking attractions as in male athletes with very nice tans and six pack abs, which somehow made me forget about the bicycle plans I had for the day. When I finally stopped drooling, pulled myself together and thought about my advanced age, I was down the road with plenty to think about for the balance of the afternoon. It was all good.

It Seems Like A Long Road
I packed up my bike on Sunday morning to venture off to the Yorba Linda Park. There is a bike path there and also an access to a Freeway riverbed. If I stay on this path long enough, it will take me all the way to the beach. If I stay on this path long enough I’ll have to call someone to pick me up. Let me just say this, it’s a heck of a long way, and yes of course I’ll expect that to be a future goal and I am well aware that by the time I achieve that goal I may be too old to wear a swimsuit. But I will get there.
The first time I rode this path, I managed 10 miles. The second time 20 miles, and the third time I completed 30 miles. I went so far that I was rather alone on the road and I began to feel uncomfortable. Darn it, I think I could have gone a few more miles, but I turned around and came back. Next time I need to find a riding companion.
Look at me, securing my bike with bundge cords. I found them at the 99 cent store and of course I was hoping to find colors that would match my bike and I probably could find them at the $9.99 cent store. Anyway, this is quite empowering and every time someone asks if they can help. I respond with a big smile and say no thanks, I have to learn how to do this myself.

Just Relax - Have Fun
Sometimes I find myself pushing too hard. I feel like I have so much to accomplish within a narrowing window. I go to the gym, I have a dance class, I have my bike training, and on top of that I still work and try to save time for relationships too. I almost hate to remind myself that I am 60 years old, and along with chronic knee issues, I just plain run out of energy. Sure I am grateful to be healthy and happy, these are all wonderful things to have in your life, but sometimes I need to remind myself of my own preaching. Number one priority, Have Fun. Dead-heading the roses can always wait, as well as the other chores.
Today, my two wheeler Barbie Hybrid and I went out to get reacquainted. We went to the park, and rode the path. I didn't use the fitness bike nor the clip on shoes and pedals today because I was concentrating on a new goal. I wanted to see if I could smile and say "Good Morning" to every person I passed along the way. What might seem easy to many was an accomplishment for me because I am rather shy by nature. I enjoyed myself so much and found that it's alright to put yourself out there. Everyone loves to be acknowledged and appreciates a smile.
I came away with an important lesson learned. Not sometimes, but many times, we need to just have fun. Get on the bike and visit your neighbor, get a whip antenna for the dog leash and take them out to socialize too. I want people to see that I am enjoying my journey; and I am.

It Takes A Village
I live in a small community that is nice and safe, so that is where I started my bicycle practice. It didn’t take long for even Me to become bored with the small confines and it got me thinking about my next adventure.
I got organized and started out on a Sunday morning about 6:00 a.m. figuring that there would be minimal traffic. I was not going to use the sidewalk because I was afraid someone would yell at me. I bravely tried to stay as close to the curb as possible. Well, that became a little dicey because my wheel kept getting caught in the road groove. This was ridiculous and probably more unsafe. Although I felt foolish, I soon reminded myself with gloves, a helmet, sun glasses, etc. I was hardly recognizable so what the heck, I preceded down the road thrilled with acknowledgements from other riders; the kind of guys that zip down the road in all their professional gear.
Well, I didn’t get too far but promised myself that the next time I would push just a little harder. Boy did I think I was hot stuff pulling into my garage at the end of my journey. My next mission was to find safe and comfortable bike paths to use. Stay tuned for the next hurdle that came my way. By the way, I don't know where this picture was taken, but it's very pretty don't you think?

Trek Girl Not Breck Girl
Before I could say where is the hair spray?, I was in Wisconsin, learning about bikes, bike geometry, helmets and photo shoots. I can't believe I actually handed over my brush, comb and eyebrow pencil to a stranger. I literally relinquished control of my 60's hair do. Why, because we were the new sisterhood of Trek Girls. Of course my Trek sisters were all young, fresh and full of energy but I was lovin the opportunity to be part of this group and still garner the chance to be referred to as a girl. Somewhere from within that photo shoot I heard someone say, Trek Girl, not Breck Girl. I am not saying that the comment was directed to me, but I am pretty good at taking hints and suggestions. I now happily wear my bike helmet and have traded the look of Beaver Cleaver's mother for the healthy natural look of the helmet head. By the way I don't have to get up so early in the morning to fix my hair before I walk the dog.

Spilled The "Half-Baked Beans"

I couldn’t stand it any longer; I had to spill the beans to someone. First I told Molly (My Golden Retriever) I told her I entered the contest and as always, as you can see by the expression on her face, she was cautiously full of support for my half-baked ideas. Then, I told my daughters. Just as always they too were full of support for me. We all agreed I might have a chance to win. After all, the bike riders of today are not all 20 and 30 years old. I know, of at least one.

"The Average Woman"
After I ordered my first bike, I thought I better start asking questions about how they ride bikes these days. After all it was back in the 1950's when I had my bike. My saving grace was that they still came with two wheels. I went to the Trek website for information. It was there that I read the story about Women Who Ride. I would be riding soon and they were not necessarily looking for professionals; Trek wanted the average woman; finally I qualified for something. Although I felt oddly confident that I could win the contest, I also felt great that I had the gumption to enter at all. I told not a soul.

The "Old Rose"
Friends say to me that I have re-invented myself, or that they have watched me face my fears head on. At the time that I was processing through each new occasion, I didn’t think about it in that way. I just knew that I wasn’t finished yet. When it came right down to it, I wanted to take more experiences with me. I wanted my grandchildren to brag about Grand Marie (aptly named by grandson William). I wanted people to say fun things about me when I was gone.
I wanted to exit like the "Old Rose" in the movie Titanic. Remember all the pictures on her nightstand that showed her adventures. Maybe some day I’ll be standing at the top of some mountain. I’ll never be tossing a diamond away, (I’m not stupid) but I might be holding a martini.
