Gutter bunny day...

Bike2workday_2 gutter bunny n. a bicycling commuter.*

I am a rather soggy bunny on this, National Bike-to-Work Day. Rain showers happening here. I got up this morning, taught my spin class, and seriously contemplated whether I was going to honor my pledge to bike commute today.

On the one hand, I promised to hop to it. And on the other, ugh, I hate getting skunk butt, or whatever you call it, when mud and road gross-ness flings up from your rear tire onto your rear-end in a nice neat vertical stripe. Plus, I do worry about wiping out on slick streets.

But, I did it! I rode Shady since she’s got the grippiest tires of all my Treks. However, I decided to bypass the Bike to Work main event down at Freedom Plaza hosted by the awesome Washington Area Bicyclist Association. No breakfast and swag for me this year.  That’s okay, it’s the biking that counts, not the free bagel and water bottle.

With any luck, I won’t be riding home in a down pour tonight.

*I didn't make this term up. Feel free to google it.

WTG Laura! I commuted home from work yesterday -- a little over 21 miles. WTG Ginger! Jen helped me plan out the route since she lives close to the area and could help me find some less-traveled roads. After about the first 5 miles I was wondernig why the heck I did it, but I DID IT! I'm posting pictures soon...

Whoo hoo Ginger! You get the star for the day!!! I only had to go 2 miles. No rain on the way home, so that was nice

Gutter bunny: bicycling commuter NOT using proper lane position. Be PROUD to be a commuter!
And fenders prevent skunkbutt...

Oops... forgot to add "haughty sniff" and a big grin after that...

Uh oh -- I didn't see the "NOT" part on Google. Dang, am I going to have to banish it from my web browser like evil Mapquest?

I've got to get some fenders that's for sure. Although, I keep thinking about those CUTE CUTE CUTE Trek commuter bikes I saw in Holland with fenders and a rack on the back.

Hey, Google doesn't always have the inside scoo :) But seriously... "gutter bunny" gives an image of a rider actually in the curb - totally awful lane position - and hopping up and down or back and forth, either from invisible to visible or in and out if the lane (or just up and down in the saddle)... it's worse than being tagged a "squirrel" by roadies in my not-so-humble opinion. And riding like that, of course, means lots more close calls and scary moments and so a new commuter is likely to think "holey canoli! I don't know how they do it - and they ride out there in the lanes where it has to be worse!!" (It isn't, of course!)
Fenders :) There are some amazing ones. http://www.woodysfenders.com/store/
